About

Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) was founded in 2013 by economists and conservatives who opposed euro-zone bailouts, before pivoting decisively toward migration restriction and populist nationalism after 2015. In the February 2025 German federal elections it became Germany's second-largest party with around twenty percent of the vote. AfD forms the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group in the European Parliament, having been expelled from the Identity and Democracy group in 2024.
