German Comedian Calls Blocking AfD ‘Pest Control’

German comedian Dieter Hallervorden sparked controversy by calling opposition to the AfD party "pest control" in a TikTok video ahead of crucial state elections where the party polls at 43 percent.

In the Friday video, Hallervorden stated he was “very successful in pest control” and explained how: by simply not voting for the AfD. The remarks represent the latest in a series of videos the entertainer has posted in recent days targeting the opposition party ahead of crucial state elections.

Hallervorden has escalated his rhetoric significantly in the campaign period. In another video, he claimed the AfD was dangerous as a firestorm to democracy, adding that democracy is “far too important a matter to leave to the AfD.” Notably, the comedian provided no substantiation for these accusations.

The entertainment figure has actively campaigned in recent weeks to prevent an AfD-led government following the state election scheduled for September 6 in Saxony-Anhalt. The most recent polling shows the AfD reaching a record 43 percent support in the state.

Sven Schulze, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, has given Hallervorden a platform during the campaign, touring the state with the comedian. Hallervorden used these appearances not only to attack the AfD but also to perform a song about “War Minister” Pistorius and to spread what Nius characterizes as genocide lies about Israel.

The inflammatory “pest control” language marks a new low in the increasingly heated political discourse surrounding the AfD, which has seen dramatic growth in support across eastern German states. The party’s rising poll numbers have prompted establishment parties to intensify their opposition efforts, with figures like Hallervorden being enlisted to sway voters away from the opposition party.

The CDU’s decision to campaign alongside Hallervorden despite his controversial statements raises questions about the establishment’s tactics in countering the AfD’s electoral momentum in the region.
