AfD Extends Lead Over Union in New Poll

According to Nius, fresh polling data from YouGov places the Alternative for Germany at 28 percent support, significantly ahead of the CDU/CSU Union on 20 percent. The new numbers represent an expansion of the AfD’s advantage, with the party gaining one percentage point since YouGov’s previous survey conducted on July 14, 2026.

The Greens secured 15 percent in the YouGov poll, also gaining one point, while the SPD and Die Linke each registered 12 percent support. The FDP maintained 5 percent, continuing what polling analysts have described as a modest bounce attributed to Wolfgang Kubicki. The BSW dropped one point to 3 percent, with other parties collectively polling at 5 percent.

A second poll from Insa, commissioned by Bild newspaper, confirmed the trend with strikingly similar results. The survey placed the AfD at 28.5 percent and the Union at 20.5 percent, maintaining the same eight-point gap between the two largest parties.

In the Insa polling, the Greens recorded 13 percent support, while the SPD and Die Linke again tied at 12 percent each. The FDP remained at 5 percent, with the BSW at 3 percent and other parties collectively at 6 percent.

Compared to Insa’s previous survey from August 11, 2026, the SPD lost half a percentage point while Die Linke and the FDP each gained 0.5 points. Other parties declined by half a point.

The polling data underscores the AfD’s consolidation of support and the ongoing difficulties facing the traditional establishment parties, particularly the Union, which has failed to close the gap with its right-wing challenger. The FDP’s ability to maintain the 5 percent threshold represents a bright spot for the classical liberal party as it seeks to return to the Bundestag.

Both polling firms paint a consistent picture of an electorate increasingly dissatisfied with centrist options, with the AfD emerging as the clear frontrunner in what promises to be a highly contested federal election.
