About
Founded in 1956, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) evolved from a liberal-nationalist tradition into one of Europe's foremost national-conservative and right-wing populist parties. Under Herbert Kickl it champions strict immigration controls, opposition to sanctions on Russia, and skepticism toward EU federalism. The party's result of nearly 29 percent in the September 2024 national elections made it Austria's largest party by vote share, and Kickl subsequently became Federal Chancellor in January 2025 after coalition negotiations.
