Massive Madrid Protest Demands Sánchez Resignation
Thousands of Spanish citizens marched in Madrid demanding Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's resignation amid widening corruption allegations engulfing his socialist administration.
The mass demonstration saw protesters wave national flags and brandish placards bearing the stark message “Enough!” while marching behind a prominent banner that read: “Corruption has a price. No more impunity. Resignation and elections now.” The civic uprising brought together more than 150 civil society organisations operating under the banner Sociedad Civil Española, with support from the opposition Popular Party and the sovereigntist VOX movement.
Competing Estimates of Turnout
Organisers claimed the demonstration drew approximately 80,000 participants, though the regional government representative estimated the actual figure at roughly half that number. The march culminated near Plaza de Moncloa, positioning protesters within sight of the prime minister’s official residence.
Expanding Corruption Allegations
Santiago Abascal, leader of VOX, articulated public frustration ahead of the march, stating that corruption allegations have engulfed Sánchez’s inner circle. The allegations extend to family members and close associates of the prime minister, intensifying pressure on his government.
Sánchez initially came to power in 2018 after orchestrating a no-confidence vote that removed the previous Popular Party administration, which itself faced corruption investigations. Despite mounting accusations targeting his entourage, the socialist prime minister has indicated his determination to remain in office and continue his tenure.
