Enes Kanter Freedom, a former center for the Boston Celtics and other NBA teams, declared his interest in the top job following Friday’s announcement that embattled WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will step down after this season, as reported by Valentina Martinez writing in New York Post.
Kanter Freedom posted a video on social media making his case to replace Engelbert, framing his candidacy around protecting biological women in sports and restoring what he calls basic principles to the league.
Commissioner Freedom Has a Nice Ring to It, he wrote on X, declaring his intent to lead the league back to greatness and restore fairness for all women. While Engelbert’s reported retirement represents a victory for women and an acknowledgment that league rules must change, Kanter Freedom argued, her departure alone does not address the systemic problems that need fixing to protect women’s sports.
Federal Lawsuit Filed Over WNBA Arena Removal
The announcement came just one day after Kanter Freedom filed a federal lawsuit in Illinois over alleged mistreatment at a WNBA game in August. He is suing the Chicago Sky, the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, and the city of Chicago, claiming all three entities unjustly removed him from the Sky versus Indiana Fever game on August 23 at Wintrust Arena.
The incident involved a heated exchange between Kanter Freedom and Sky guard Natasha Cloud that resulted in his removal from the venue. Speaking to Fox News, the former NBA player explained he was simply there to watch and support the Fever. After celebrating a three-point shot by Sophie Cunningham, Cloud allegedly approached him and made inappropriate comments, leading to a confrontation.
Kanter Freedom said he stood up and told Cloud he was there to protect women, nothing more. Shortly after, he was escorted out of the arena.
Divisive Figure in Women’s Sports Debate
The Turkish-American basketball player has emerged as arguably the most divisive figure in the ongoing controversy over transgender participation in women’s sports. Critics have accused him of grandstanding and damaging the sport, while supporters credit him with defending the integrity of biological female competition.
His bid for the commissioner position comes amid growing debate within women’s professional sports about eligibility standards and how leagues should define female athletes. Kanter Freedom has made clear that if selected, he would implement strict biological sex-based criteria for participation.
