Hate Crime Hoax Costs Major California School District Dearly
A California school district faces mounting legal costs after removing a legendary football coach based on unsubstantiated racial abuse allegations that have since unraveled.
The controversy erupted in 2022 when Keshia Thomas, a trustee on the Fresno Unified School Board, accused teacher and Bullard High School football coach Don Arax of using a racial slur against her son during practice, as Zachary Faria reports in Washington Examiner. Arax, who had led the school’s football program for nearly a quarter-century, was removed from his coaching position mid-season, though he retained his teaching role.
The veteran coach responded by filing a defamation lawsuit against Thomas and the district. In a 2025 deposition, Thomas claimed she never actually accused Arax of using the slur—despite documented evidence to the contrary. She has since issued what critics describe as a hollow apology while continuing to deny making the initial accusation.
District Acted Without Investigation
Court depositions have revealed disturbing details about the district’s handling of the matter. Former superintendent Bob Nelson admitted under oath that Fresno Unified failed to investigate Thomas’s allegations before taking action against Arax. Nelson further acknowledged he did not consider the potential damage to the coach’s reputation if the accusations proved false.
The district proceeded with full institutional support for Thomas’s claims, willing to destroy a respected educator’s career based solely on her word.
Mounting Financial and Political Costs
Fresno Unified has already spent nearly 370,000 dollars defending itself and Thomas throughout the legal proceedings. The district faces potential liability running into the millions, as Arax has refused settlement offers thus far.
The financial burden comes at a particularly difficult time for California’s third-largest school district, which is implementing budget cuts amid declining enrollment. District officials are only now considering whether to stop funding Thomas’s legal defense and have attempted to argue they bear no responsibility for her defamatory statements—despite having acted upon them.
Trustee Seeks Higher Office Despite Scandal
Adding to the controversy, Thomas is currently campaigning for a seat on the Fresno city council. When the local teachers union called for her resignation from the school board, she dismissed the demand as irresponsible and distracting.
The case represents a clear example of institutional complicity in perpetuating false allegations for political purposes. A school board member with apparent political ambitions effectively ended a man’s coaching career through public accusations, aided by an administration that abandoned basic due diligence and fairness.
Fresno Unified now faces the consequences of enabling an ideologically motivated attack on one of its own educators, with taxpayers footing the bill for the district’s failure to verify explosive claims before acting on them.
