The announcement followed a high-level security meeting in Tel Aviv with Defense Minister Israel Katz and Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, chief of staff for the Israel Defense Forces, according to Breitbart News. The discussions centered on Israel’s strategic response to continuing Hezbollah attacks from Lebanese territory.

Hezbollah has intensified its use of drone warfare from positions north of the river, deploying fiber optic control systems and visual targeting technology that make interception and jamming extremely difficult. IDF units are reportedly working urgently to develop improvised countermeasures against this growing drone threat.

Evacuation Order for Major Lebanese City

On the same day, the IDF issued evacuation orders for the city of Tyre and surrounding suburbs. Tyre, Lebanon’s fifth-largest city with approximately 200,000 residents, will face strikes targeting what Israel describes as Hezbollah command centers operating within the urban area.

Avichay Adraee, an Arab-language spokesman for the Israeli military, stated that Hezbollah’s violations of the ceasefire agreement and continued attacks on Israeli territory have forced the IDF to respond forcefully. He instructed residents to evacuate immediately northward beyond the Zahrani River for their own safety.

Strategic Fighting Along Buffer Zone

Hezbollah claimed Wednesday that its fighters engaged Israeli forces at close range in the town of Zawtar al-Shaqiyah, a strategic location near the Yellow Line in southern Lebanon. The position represents a key objective for Israel’s expanded security buffer.

Israel launched its ground invasion of Lebanon in early March after enduring years of rocket attacks from Hezbollah terrorists operating on behalf of Iran. Despite United Nations resolutions and Lebanese government promises to disarm the terrorist group, Israel ultimately decided to seize control of Lebanese territory south of the Litani River and eliminate Hezbollah weapons from the area permanently, as Breitbart News reports.

Katz pledged at the operation’s launch that Israel would ensure security for Galilee settlements.

Ceasefire Complications and Drone Warfare

While U.S.-brokered ceasefire arrangements with Iran temporarily interrupted Israeli operations, Hezbollah never ceased its attacks. The terrorist organization has demonstrated increasing sophistication with low-cost drone technology, reshaping the tactical battlefield and heightening risks to IDF personnel in Lebanon.

In mid-April, Israeli and Lebanese officials held their first direct negotiations in over three decades. Despite both sides finding common ground in opposing Hezbollah, Israel emerged from those talks without confidence in the Lebanese government’s ability or willingness to enforce Hezbollah disarmament. The terrorist group openly rejects any such efforts and refuses to participate in continued Israeli-Lebanese discussions.

Beirut opposes the Israeli invasion but simultaneously resents Hezbollah for unilaterally dragging Lebanon into armed conflict with its southern neighbor.

Trump Talks and Timeline Pressures

Netanyahu expressed concern that a potential U.S. peace agreement with Iran might mandate a halt to Israeli operations in Lebanon. During a Saturday telephone conversation with President Donald Trump, Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself against threats on every front, including Lebanon.

The Israeli leader conveyed his appreciation for Trump’s commitment to Israeli security. Both leaders agree that any final agreement with Iran must eliminate the nuclear threat, though their perspectives on addressing Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed dangers may not fully align.

According to the Times of Israel, anonymous sources from Washington, Tehran, and Jerusalem suggest the emerging agreement framework has raised Israeli concerns that Trump may settle for less than the original U.S.-Israeli campaign objectives. The reported plan includes a ceasefire in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, which would effectively constrain IDF operations against a direct threat to the Israeli homeland initiated at Iran’s direction.

Netanyahu and Katz appear to be accelerating operations in Lebanon before potential diplomatic constraints take effect. With Israeli elections scheduled for later this month, the Prime Minister faces mounting pressure to demonstrate tangible security gains from the Lebanon invasion.
