The Israeli minister’s comments reflect growing concern in Jerusalem over the possibility of renewed nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran, particularly as diplomatic channels between the two nations appear to be reopening under various international pressures.

Israel’s Red Lines on Iranian Nuclear Development

Cohen emphasized that any Iranian move to advance its nuclear weapons capability or expand its ballistic missile arsenal would be considered an unacceptable threat to Israeli national security. His statement underscores Israel’s longstanding position that it will not rely solely on international agreements to contain the Iranian nuclear threat.

The warning comes at a time when Iran’s nuclear program has already advanced significantly beyond the limitations imposed by the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, from which the United States withdrew in 2018. Tehran has progressively increased its uranium enrichment levels and expanded its stockpile of nuclear material, bringing it closer to weapons-grade capability.

Israel has historically demonstrated its willingness to act unilaterally against perceived existential threats in the region, including previous strikes against nuclear facilities in Iraq and Syria.
