Zelensky Seeks US Drone Deal Amid Warning of Russian Offensive
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is seeking a major deal with the United States to combine Ukraine's combat drone experience with American AI technology and manufacturing capabilities.
Speaking with CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Zelensky outlined his vision for combining Ukraine’s hard-won battlefield drone experience with American technological capabilities and artificial intelligence systems. He argued such collaboration would benefit both nations and create the world’s most formidable drone partnership.
The Ukrainian leader noted that American technology companies possess sophisticated AI capabilities Ukraine currently lacks, while Ukraine has developed unique expertise through combat operations against Moscow. He characterized the potential cooperation as huge and unprecedented in scale.
While some drone cooperation between Washington and Kyiv already exists, as New York Post reports, no comprehensive agreement has been finalized at the level Zelensky envisions. Ukraine is targeting production of seven million drones this year alone for deployment in air and maritime operations.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has prioritized expanding American drone capabilities and recently acknowledged the Pentagon has learned considerably from Ukrainian operational methods.
Congressional Engagement on Drone Cooperation
Last week, Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Jim Himes, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, both from Connecticut, traveled to Ukraine to discuss drone technology and related defense matters with Ukrainian officials.
Military analysts have pointed to Ukraine’s drone innovations as a significant factor in recent battlefield gains against Russian forces. Another crucial development was Starlink’s decision to terminate Russian access to its satellite internet service.
Russia Preparing Major Air Assault
Zelensky warned Sunday that Ukraine anticipates severe aerial bombardment from Russia within the next 48 hours, marking the second consecutive week of intensified attacks. He urged Ukrainian civilians to exercise extreme caution and utilize bomb shelters, particularly for children, as intelligence indicates a high probability of incoming strikes.
The Ukrainian president stated his forces detect Russian preparation for attacks involving drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic weapons. Last weekend alone, Russia launched approximately 600 drones and 90 missiles against Ukrainian targets.
Zelensky attributed the escalation to Russian setbacks on the battlefield, suggesting Moscow is compensating for territorial losses through intensified air campaigns.
Patriot Systems Request to Trump
Over Memorial Day weekend, Zelensky sent a letter to President Trump requesting additional Patriot missile defense systems. While acknowledging Ukraine’s substantial drone defense capabilities, he emphasized critical gaps in ballistic missile defense infrastructure.
The Ukrainian leader echoed assessments from his brigadier generals that the next six months represent a decisive period for Kyiv. He suggested a window exists for negotiations as Russian casualties mount and Moscow loses battlefield initiative, though success depends on maintaining pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
