WWF France President Resigns After Attending Anti-Racism Rally
WWF France president Alexandra Palt resigned amid backlash for attending an anti-racism rally organized by controversial activist Bally Bagayoko, citing disagreements with leadership over values.
Alexandra Palt, an Austrian national who assumed the presidency of the environmental organization on June 18, 2024, announced her departure on Thursday, citing fundamental disagreements with the organization’s leadership over values and the role of WWF in contemporary society.
In a LinkedIn post, Palt revealed that her resignation came preemptively, before formal removal proceedings could be initiated against her. She stated that it had become clear that she and the organization’s leadership were no longer aligned on essential questions of values.
WWF Leadership Invoked Apolitical Stance
The controversy erupted after Palt attended what she described as a cross-party gathering against racism in Saint-Denis. Her participation drew sharp criticism from Isabelle Autissier, the honorary president of WWF France, and a member of the board of directors.
According to excerpts from messages cited by Palt, WWF leadership took issue with her presence at an event organized by a party often noted for its attitude toward Jews. They reminded her of WWF’s commitment to remaining apolitical in all its activities.
Competing Visions of Activism
Palt defended her actions by arguing that fighting racism and antisemitism goes to the very foundations of the French republican compact and should never be reduced to partisan divisions. Her professional background includes senior roles at France’s High Authority for the Fight Against Discrimination and for Equality, as well as at cosmetics giant L’Oréal.
WWF France officially acknowledged Palt’s resignation while clarifying that removal proceedings had already been initiated and unanimously approved by all members of the board of directors before her departure.
The incident highlights growing tensions within major institutions over whether participation in certain social justice movements constitutes political activism incompatible with organizational neutrality.
