WHCA President Defies Pressure at Annual Dinner Event
The White House Correspondents' Association held its rescheduled dinner on Friday with enhanced security, three months after a gunman's attempted breach forced cancellation of the original April event.
Outgoing WHCA President Weijia Jiang of CBS News opened the evening at the Waldorf Astoria hotel with a pointed declaration that the press corps would not be cowed by the spring violence, according to Molly Parks writing in Washington Examiner.
We will not be intimidated. We refuse to let violence have the final word, Jiang told the assembled crowd of White House pool reporters, Beltway journalists, and Trump administration officials.
The July dinner was announced in early June after both the WHCA and President Donald Trump made clear they would not allow the attempted breach to derail the annual celebration of press freedom. Security measures were significantly enhanced for the rescheduled event, which drew a smaller crowd than typically attends the high-profile Washington gathering.
Trump himself had signaled his support for the do-over in a June post on Truth Social, stating that lunatics cannot be permitted to alter the nation’s way of life or its scheduling.
April Night ‘Will Go Down in History’
Jiang praised the response of those present during the April 25 incident, highlighting how reporters immediately shifted into work mode despite the chaos and uncertainty. She noted that journalists began taking notes, recording video, and streaming live coverage even as anxiety swept through the ballroom.
The WHCA president also commended law enforcement personnel who ran toward the danger, administration officials who gathered backstage to assess the situation, and Trump himself, who proceeded directly to the White House briefing room podium to answer questions from journalists still dressed in formal attire.
Striking a tone of unity, Jiang echoed Trump’s own characterization of the April evening, noting that the ballroom had been totally unified that night and remained so three months later. She emphasized that regardless of political or professional differences, all present stood united against political violence, calling an assassination attempt on the president an attack on democracy itself.
Administration Officials Attend
Multiple senior Trump administration figures attended Friday’s event, including War Secretary Pete Hegseth, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The evening’s programme included the presentation of WHCA awards and remarks from President Trump to the assembled guests.
