US Commentators Barred from UK Over Israel Criticism
Two American commentators say they were barred from entering the UK after criticizing Israel, sparking concerns about free speech under the British government.
Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker, both left-wing media figures with large online followings, say British authorities blocked them from traveling to the UK for scheduled speaking engagements, according to Brussels Signal.
Uygur, co-founder of The Young Turks progressive news network, said he was prevented from boarding a flight to London where he planned to attend SXSW London and deliver a speech at Oxford University.
“I’ve been banned for criticizing Israel,” Uygur wrote on social media. “Are we free anymore? This is oppression of Western citizens by our own governments on behalf of a different country.”
Piker, who streams political commentary under the name “HasanAbi” to a massive Twitch audience, echoed the allegation. He claimed British officials revoked his visa and suggested the action came at Israel’s request.
“The West is betraying ‘liberal values’ for a genocidal fascist foreign government,” Piker wrote.
Neither commentator has publicly released official documentation confirming that British authorities cited their views on Israel as the specific reason for the travel ban.
Claims of Selective Enforcement
During a livestream, Piker said he had intended to meet with Green Party leader Zack Polanski and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, as well as participate in events at Oxford. He accused Western governments of prioritizing Israeli interests over freedom of expression.
When viewers pointed out that right-wing YouTuber Nick Shirley had recently entered the UK without issue, Piker suggested authorities were selectively targeting critics of Israel while allowing others through.
Uygur told followers that British officials took issue with comments he made in the United States regarding Israeli influence in American politics. He said authorities deemed certain remarks anti-Semitic, specifically his assertion that Israel “controls the American government” through political donations.
Uygur defended the statement as factual and accused the UK of censoring speech that exposes responsibility for war crimes.
Part of Broader Crackdown on Entry
The incident follows a series of similar exclusions by British authorities in recent months. In May, the UK barred several right-wing activists, politicians and commentators from entering ahead of a rally supported by activist Tommy Robinson.
Those refused entry included American commentator Joey Mannarino and rapper Kanye West.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended the policy, describing certain figures as “far-right agitators” whose presence would inflame tensions or threaten public order.
The escalating pattern of travel bans has sparked debate over whether political viewpoints are now being used as grounds for exclusion in Britain, and whether the Labour government is applying standards unevenly across the ideological spectrum.
Piker, who previously worked for The Young Turks before building an independent streaming platform, focuses his content on American politics, foreign policy and social issues. Uygur has long argued that legitimate criticism of Israeli government policy is being falsely conflated with anti-Semitism in Western political discourse.
