Unknown ‘Mediators’ Float 10-Day Ceasefire for U.S. and Iran
International mediators are proposing a ten-day ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. to revive peace talks, though Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Tehran must prove its commitment first.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters that the de-escalation proposal has been presented to Tehran, though the source provided minimal details about which nations are serving as intermediaries. Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman have each positioned themselves as potential mediators between the United States and Iran during negotiations over the past five months.
Esmaeil Baghaei, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, confirmed at a Sunday press conference that mediation efforts are underway but offered few specifics about the proposal or who is behind it.
Baghaei stated that mediators are attempting to prevent further escalation while Iran’s armed forces continue responding to what he described as American aggression. His remarks provided little clarity on whether Tehran is genuinely interested in diplomatic resolution.
Rubio: Iran Must Prove Commitment to Peace
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that the United States remains willing to pursue diplomatic solutions, but Iran must demonstrate serious intent before negotiations can progress meaningfully.
Rubio emphasized that the June Memorandum of Understanding cannot be considered viable if Iran continues violating its terms, specifically referencing Tehran’s deadly terror attacks on civilian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Secretary of State revealed that Iran has indicated interest in negotiations both directly and through multiple third-party channels with other nations, as Breitbart News reports.
Rubio noted a growing internal divide within the Iranian regime between factions that recognize the country’s economic collapse and understand the need for change, and hardline militants who continue launching missile strikes.
Supreme Leader Dismisses Agreement
Iran’s rarely-seen supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly issued a statement Saturday calling the June Memorandum of Understanding worthless and invalid. The authenticity and details of this statement remain unclear.
Despite the lack of concrete details about the ceasefire proposal, financial markets responded positively Monday. The S&P 500 rose 0.63 percent, the Nasdaq gained 1.02 percent, and benchmark Brent crude oil declined to $88.46 per barrel from over $90 on Sunday.
