Trump at G7: ‘Cartels Control Mexico’
President Trump accused Mexican drug cartels of controlling Mexico and criticized President Sheinbaum for lacking courage to confront them, vowing U.S. intervention amid tensions over cartel-linked officials.
Speaking at the G7 Summit, Trump outlined his administration’s escalating focus on narcotics trafficking across the southern border, according to Breitbart News. The president noted that maritime drug smuggling has declined by more than 90 percent, shifting enforcement priorities to overland routes.
Donald Trump emphasized that the primary concern now centers on drugs flowing into the United States through Mexican territory.
“They come through Mexico,” the president stated during his remarks. “Mexico has lost control of their country. The cartels control Mexico, and it’s sad.”
Trump described Sheinbaum as a good woman but characterized her as frightened, asserting that criminal syndicates are “totally running Mexico.”
The sharp criticism arrives amid mounting bilateral tensions as the Mexican president actively shields multiple high-ranking officials facing United States criminal proceedings related to alleged cartel connections.
As Breitbart News previously documented, the U.S. Department of Justice issued criminal indictments against Ruben Rocha Moya, the current governor of Sinaloa, along with nine associates on drug trafficking conspiracy charges. Federal prosecutors accuse the officials of collaborating with the Sinaloa Cartel.
Because Rocha Moya belongs to Sheinbaum’s MORENA party, the Mexican president has mounted a public defense of the indicted governor, claiming no evidence supports the accusations and dismissing the charges as politically motivated attacks from the American far right attempting to destabilize the progressive MORENA movement.
The MORENA party was established by Sheinbaum’s political mentor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who maintains a personal friendship with Rocha Moya. Beyond the Sinaloa governor, Sheinbaum has extended protection to other Mexican officials under American scrutiny, including the governors of Tamaulipas and Sonora, as well as a former governor of Tabasco, all currently under investigation by United States authorities.
The Trump administration’s willingness to publicly confront Mexico’s failure to combat cartel influence signals a hardening stance on cross-border criminal activity and raises questions about the future of bilateral cooperation on security matters.
