Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) is Italy’s dominant governing party and the flagship national-conservative force in the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group. Led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, FdI has transformed from a post-fascist minority into the most-voted Italian party, polling above 28%. It is central to the right-wing realignment reshaping European politics.
About
Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy) was founded in 2012 as the direct successor to Alleanza Nazionale, itself heir to the post-war Italian Social Movement. Under Giorgia Meloni's leadership the party evolved from a marginal force into Italy's most voted party, winning 26% in the 2022 general election. It now leads a centre-right governing coalition and is the dominant force within the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the European Parliament. The party stands for national sovereignty, border security, traditional family values and a EU of nation-states rather than a federal superstate.

Giorgia Meloni was born in Rome in 1977. She has served as president of Fratelli d'Italia since 2014, steering the party from the margins to the centre of Italian politics. In October 2022 she became Prime Minister of Italy — the first woman to hold the office in the country's history. She remains one of the most influential right-wing leaders in Europe and a key figure in the realignment of the European conservative movement.
