Paris's socialist mayor plans to propose granting honorary citizenship to Gaza and West Bank civilians and Palestinian journalists at a mid-June council meeting.

Emmanuel Grégoire will present the proposal at the next Paris Council meeting scheduled for mid-June, according to Valeurs Actuelles. The move could dramatically increase the number of honorary citizens of the French capital.

The mayor’s office has framed the initiative as part of Paris’s humanitarian tradition. Officials told Le Nouvel Obs that the city has always linked its name to the freedom of peoples and human dignity, choosing civilians over violence, law over arbitrariness, and life over destruction.

The proposal is expected to receive backing from the left-wing majority on the Paris Council, which includes socialists, environmentalists, and members of the far-left La France Insoumise party.

The announcement comes weeks after Paris City Hall received Hala Abou Hassira, the Palestinian ambassador to France. The City of Paris has once again condemned what it calls the unprecedented brutality of Israel’s military response following the October 7 attack.

Grégoire’s office claims that innocent civilians are primarily paying the daily price of Israel’s military response. The mayor’s team has reaffirmed its commitment to a two-state solution based on the coexistence of two peoples living side by side in security and dignity.

Paris has previously granted honorary citizenship to populations facing war or persecution. Audrey Pulvar, deputy mayor for international relations, noted that the distinction has been awarded to the residents of Kiev and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The symbolic gesture represents another instance of European municipal authorities wading into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through ceremonial designations, a practice that critics say politicizes local government while doing little to address underlying security and humanitarian concerns in the region.
