Pelley brazenly told the Times he decided not to make the requested changes, refused to even call Weiss about it, and simply aired the segment as he saw fit. Such open insubordination would result in immediate termination at most news organizations.

In perhaps his most self-aggrandizing moment, Pelley invoked his wartime reporting experience in a barely veiled attack on President Trump. He stated he had been in combat for America in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait, been shot at, and spent nights in foxholes, before asking to be corrected if the President had ever done comparable service.

The statement conveniently ignored that President Trump sacrificed a comfortable private life and survived an assassination attempt while serving his country.

Pelley concluded his interview by declaring that CBS management does not know what they are doing and warning of a political bias at 60 Minutes and CBS News he claims never existed before. He positioned himself as the indispensable figure who could save the network, warning that CBS News is currently on fire.

The entire episode reveals the narcissistic worldview prevalent among legacy media figures who cannot fathom that their institutions might function, or even improve, without them. Time will tell whether Pelley follows the path of other displaced media personalities like Chuck Todd, Terry Moran, and Jim Acosta, fading into relative obscurity on subscription platforms while their former employers continue operating.
