Seth Moulton claimed the ongoing confrontation with Iran has been unsuccessful at every stage. He suggested the Trump administration has recognized this reality and is now pursuing diplomatic engagement with the Islamic Republic.

The Democratic lawmaker characterized the situation by stating it is Washington, not Tehran, that is actively seeking a negotiated settlement. Despite this unfavorable position, Moulton argued that diplomacy remains the wisest path forward to prevent deeper American entanglement in the region.

He warned that further escalation would only make withdrawal more difficult and costly for the United States.

Call for Professional Diplomats

Moulton acknowledged that American negotiating leverage is limited but urged the administration to replace what he described as real estate associates with career State Department professionals who have extensive experience dealing with Iranian officials.

These seasoned diplomats, he argued, possess the institutional knowledge and understanding of Tehran’s internal dynamics necessary to secure favorable outcomes through back-channel negotiations.

The congressman noted that Iran currently faces significant economic strain, suggesting this could provide some opening for American negotiators.

Concerns Over Strait of Hormuz

Regarding the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial portion of global oil supplies transit, Moulton stressed the need for a substantially improved agreement compared to what the Trump administration appears to be offering.

He warned that preventing Iranian control over this critical waterway should be a paramount objective in any diplomatic framework.
