Mexico’s Ex-President AMLO Wants ‘Old Trump’ Back on Cartels
Former Mexican President López Obrador broke his retirement to defend successor Sheinbaum and cartel-linked MORENA politicians from U.S. allegations while blaming far-right forces for attacks.
According to Breitbart News, the letter accuses far-right forces of orchestrating politically motivated attacks against MORENA officials in order to restore corrupt opposition politicians who would prioritize foreign interests over Mexico’s national interests.
López Obrador, commonly known as AMLO, posted the letter on social media where it was widely circulated by members of his party. Notably absent from the text is any substantive response to the criminal indictment filed against Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, a personal friend of the former president, or to allegations of cartel connections involving two other governors and various MORENA politicians.
The former president also declined to address reporting that several current MORENA leaders have been tied to cartel financing operations, as Breitbart News reports. Under MORENA’s governance, violent crime in Mexico has reached unprecedented levels that official government statistics have failed to conceal.
In his letter, AMLO appeals directly to President Donald Trump, claiming the president he knew during the first Trump administration was a reasonable partner who maintained friendly relations with Mexico. He pointed to immigration cooperation as evidence of their productive relationship, while omitting that his own government enabled industrial-scale human smuggling and trafficking operations that became lucrative revenue streams for Mexican cartels and fueled the border crisis that dominated Trump’s 2024 campaign.
The former Mexican leader also praised past collaboration on trade, tariffs, and livestock policy, but failed to acknowledge his administration allowed the New World Screwworm to enter and proliferate across Mexico. As Breitbart News reports, the parasite has now crossed into Texas and poses an existential threat to the state’s entire ranching economy.
AMLO concluded his letter by urging Trump to reject advice from what he termed the far right and return to the approach he adopted during his first term in office.
