Mélenchon Threatens Lawsuit Over Le Pen’s Edited Video

French presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon threatened to sue Marine Le Pen over a video he claims was edited to misrepresent his views on immigration and national identity.

The leader of La France Insoumise accused the National Rally parliamentary group leader of circulating a manipulated montage of his campaign remarks, according to Brussels Signal.

Mélenchon issued a public ultimatum to Le Pen, warning her to distance herself from the allegedly doctored footage or face legal consequences.

Say it publicly to deter the perpetrators, and we will leave it at that without involving the justice system, he stated.

The controversy erupted after Marine Le Pen shared a clip from a February 2025 speech in which Mélenchon discussed his vision of a “Nouvelle France” or “New France.”

In her post, Le Pen accused the left-wing firebrand of endorsing the demographic replacement thesis advanced by French writer Renaud Camus, which contends that European populations are being systematically replaced by non-European migrants.

Le Pen challenged the narrative pushed by La France Insoumise executives on television talk shows, arguing that Mélenchon’s “new France” concept was not about generational change but about ethnic origin.

She condemned the idea as racist and incompatible with the French Constitution.

Allegations of Eight Separate Cuts

Left-wing activists and Mélenchon supporters quickly claimed the video had been selectively edited to distort his message.

Pro-LFI online activist Ilan Gabet asserted that the clip contained eight separate cuts, providing timestamps as evidence of manipulation.

Gabet described the video as an assemblage of fragments stitched together with abrupt jumps and audio transitions to create a truncated and misleading message.

Mélenchon echoed these charges, declaring on social media that software had been used to slice up his statements and reassemble them to suit Le Pen’s political objectives.

Calling the alleged manipulation “a crime,” Mélenchon announced his intention to file a legal complaint under Article 226-8 of the French Penal Code, which criminalizes the public dissemination of montages using a person’s words or image without consent, unless clearly identified as edited material.

The edited video was initially shared by the social media account French Carcan, as Brussels Signal reports.

Following Mélenchon’s legal threat, the account responded by urging his movement to moderate its rhetoric and cease what it described as anti-French commentary.

This is far from the first time Mélenchon has drawn fire from the French Right over questions of national identity.

Last year, he sparked outrage by suggesting that the French language no longer belonged exclusively to the French and that it should be renamed to reflect its “creole nature.”

The dispute highlights the deepening divide between France’s populist Right and radical Left ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with both camps engaged in an increasingly bitter war of words over immigration, identity, and the future character of the French nation.
