Mamdani scrambles to repair damage after snubbing Puerto Ricans
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani reversed his decision to cancel the traditional Puerto Rican Day reception at Gracie Mansion after facing backlash from Latino community leaders.
An email sent to Latino community leaders by Alvaro Lopez, the Brooklyn borough director of the Mayor’s Office of Mass Engagement, initially stated the administration would not host the traditional pre-parade reception this year. The communication came from what detractors have labeled Mamdani’s new propaganda office.
Lopez’s message claimed the mayor wanted to prioritize attending the Fifth Avenue Parade and the Knickerbocker Parade on June 14th in order to celebrate with as many working class New Yorkers as possible, rather than holding an invitation-only reception at the mayoral residence.
The decision sparked immediate anger among Puerto Rican advocates. One community leader pointed out that every mayor since Mayor Koch has honored the Puerto Rican community with a Gracie Mansion reception during the week leading up to the National Puerto Rican Day parade, which stands as the largest parade in New York City.
The advocate described ending this tradition as a real slap in the face to the community, noting that government, community, and business leaders travel annually from Puerto Rico specifically for the Gracie reception.
Following the outcry, a mayoral representative confirmed to New York Post that the Puerto Rican Heritage reception will now take place on Saturday, June 13, the day before the parade scheduled for Sunday, June 14.
A City Hall insider attributed the public relations disaster to a junior staffer who spoke out of turn, insisting the mayor always planned to host the event. A Mamdani spokesperson stated the administration looks forward to welcoming community members and leaders to Gracie Mansion for a reception celebrating Puerto Rican Day and recognizing the vital role Puerto Ricans and Nuyoricans play in the city’s civic, cultural, and economic life.
Lopez’s Controversial Past
Alvaro Lopez generated controversy last year when New York Post revealed he celebrated tearing down posters calling for the release of Israeli hostages. His appointment to the Mass Engagement Office triggered backlash from the Jewish community.
Tensions With Latino Political Establishment
The reception debacle represents the latest conflict between Mayor Mamdani and New York’s Latino political establishment. Mamdani has endorsed fellow Democratic Socialists of America member Darializa Avila Chevalier over veteran incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in Manhattan and Bronx House District 13.
The mayor has also clashed with retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez over her successor in the upcoming Democratic primary in District 7, which encompasses parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Velazquez supports her protege, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, while Mamdani has backed fellow DSA member and Queens Assemblywoman Claire Valdez.
