Julian Reichelt on CDU Brochure: ‘Language of Historical Illiterates
The Christian Democratic Union's mass mailing of pre-written resignation letters to Alternative for Germany lawmakers has backfired on social media, with critics calling it desperate and historically illiterate.
The mailing included an anti-AfD pamphlet titled “Decline for Germany. No Alternative.” Julian Reichelt, editor-in-chief of Nius, characterized the incident as an act of desperation that is currently blowing up in the party’s face across social platforms. Even if intended as a joke, Reichelt said the move left him speechless and represented a level of embarrassment and internal desperation that could not be surpassed.
Reichelt questioned what could possibly be happening inside the Konrad Adenauer House, the CDU headquarters, to prompt such an action.
Historical Illiteracy on Display
The Nius editor expressed particular concern over the characterization of people and the largest opposition party as “harmful.” According to Reichelt, such language quickly descends into the abyss of history when one begins speaking of pests or vermin. He described this as the language of historical idiots and historical illiterates.
Reichelt argued that social media operatives are at work who constantly invoke the Fourth Reich, 1933, and the last cartridge of democracy, yet possess no actual knowledge of history. This represents the intellectual level of today’s CDU, he said, erased in comparison to the eras of Adenauer or Kohl.
Merkel’s Legacy of Mediocrity
The decline reflects the legacy of former Chancellor Angela Merkel, Reichelt contended, who replaced individual brilliance with total mediocrity and created an army of apparatchiks. The party’s current tactics suggest an organization that has lost its moorings and resorted to desperate measures against its political opponents.
The incident highlights the increasingly strained relationship between Germany’s establishment parties and the AfD, which continues to gain ground as the leading opposition force in the Bundestag despite coordinated efforts to marginalize it politically and socially.
