The political left’s fixation on President Donald Trump reached new heights Sunday night as activists and Hollywood elites staged a counter-event in New York City while the highly successful UFC Freedom 250 unfolded on the White House lawns.
According to Breitbart News, the timing of the opposition concert was no coincidence. The “Rise Up, Sing Out: A Concert for the First Amendment” began in New York just as Trump and UFC chief Dana White made their entrance from the Oval Office for the main event in Washington.
The New York gathering featured what Breitbart News describes as a parade of drag performers, aging Hollywood personalities, breathing exercises, and group singing sessions. The performers and speakers represented what the outlet characterized as the perpetually outraged elite class from Hollywood and the broader entertainment industry.
Among those taking the stage were Jane Fonda, Bette Midler, Joy Reid, Julia Roberts, Patti Smith, and Rufus Wainwright. All sought platforms to criticize Trump and his administration as they work to reshape the country.
Midler attended the concert with her daughter, while Roberts delivered remarks centered on perseverance and breathing. Roberts claimed that if we keep inhaling and exhaling, we will prevail, though she provided no supporting evidence for this assertion, as Breitbart News notes.
The event drew sharp criticism across social media platforms, with numerous commentators mocking the production and its messaging.
Fonda revived the Committee for the First Amendment last October, citing concerns about what she characterized as rising authoritarian practices and threats to free speech. The organization was originally founded by her father, actor Henry Fonda, in 1947 during the era when Hollywood figures were summoned to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
The contrast between the two events highlighted the ongoing culture war between Trump supporters and the Hollywood establishment, with each side staging competing spectacles to capture public attention.
