Iran’s President Claims No Nuclear Weapons Pursuit
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says Iran is ready to prove it does not seek nuclear weapons as U.S.-Iran negotiations advance toward a potential peace deal.
Speaking over the weekend, United States President Donald Trump confirmed that an agreement with the Iranian regime is nearing completion. According to Breitbart News, the president refrained from disclosing specific details but American officials briefed that Iranian negotiators have signaled their readiness to dismantle their nuclear programme and surrender enriched uranium stockpiles.
Tehran hints at openness to nuclear assurances
While Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed the contents of any proposed memorandum of understanding, President Pezeshkian suggested his government would be willing to enter into such an arrangement. As reported by Breitbart News, remarks published by the state-controlled Islamic Republic News Agency on Sunday cited Pezeshkian as saying that Iran had previously declared it does not seek nuclear arms and is prepared to give the world such assurances once again.
The Iranian president also claimed his country is not pursuing regional destabilisation, though he did not specify what concrete steps the regime would take to demonstrate its commitment to nonproliferation.
Final stages of a memorandum of understanding
Separately, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that discussions with Washington have reached an advanced stage. We are in the stage of finalizing a memorandum of understanding, Baqaei stated, adding that the focus of negotiations remains on ending armed conflicts rather than the nuclear question itself.
He downplayed the centrality of the nuclear issue in the talks, asserting that the priority at this juncture is halting what he described as ongoing warfare across several regional fronts, including Lebanon. Baqaei characterised Tehran’s nuclear programme as a pretext used against the Iranian people in the past.
Washington confident in nuclear disarmament path
Despite Iranian officials’ cautious language, American sources believe Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei — who has not appeared publicly since reportedly being injured during Operation Epic Fury — has endorsed the framework of a proposed deal that includes the elimination of enriched uranium stockpiles, according to Breitbart News.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed confidence in the administration’s strategy while speaking in India on Sunday. The ultimate objective, he said, is ensuring that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon. Rubio acknowledged progress on a framework but stressed that success depends on full Iranian acceptance and compliance with any final agreement.
Rubio dismissed suggestions that the Trump administration would agree to any deal that strengthens Tehran’s nuclear capabilities, calling such notions absurd given the president’s track record.
Trump vows no rush, insists on verification
President Trump reiterated on Sunday that Iran must not be permitted to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, a trajectory he warned the regime was on following the 2015 nuclear accord signed under former President Barack Obama. The president pledged that any deal negotiated under his leadership would represent the opposite approach.
Trump instructed his negotiating team not to rush, emphasising that time is on Washington’s side. The blockade imposed on Iran will remain fully enforced until a final agreement is reached, certified, and signed, he stated. He underscored that both parties must ensure the deal is concluded correctly, with no margin for error.
