GOP Rep. Huizenga Pushes for Gas Tax Holiday Relief
Michigan Republican Representative Bill Huizenga has called for suspending federal and state gas taxes to provide relief from high fuel costs, which would save Michigan drivers over 70 cents per gallon.
Representative Bill Huizenga made the appeal during an appearance on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria” on Thursday, according to Breitbart News.
The Michigan Republican emphasized that constituents in his district are vocal about energy and pump prices, prompting his call for immediate relief measures.
Huizenga outlined the potential savings for Michigan drivers, noting that the federal gas tax currently stands at 18.5 cents per gallon. Michigan motorists face an additional state levy of 52.5 cents per gallon, one of the highest rates in the nation.
Combined, a dual tax holiday at both the federal and state level would reduce costs by more than 70 cents per gallon for Michigan residents, the congressman calculated.
He framed the proposed relief as a temporary measure designed to provide breathing room while broader energy policy challenges are addressed. Huizenga pointed to ongoing economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions that continue to influence global oil markets.
The Republican lawmaker also referenced administration officials including Scott Bessent and Kevin Hassett, expressing agreement with their assessments of the energy landscape.
Huizenga acknowledged that while the United States has made significant strides toward energy self-sufficiency, global markets remain vulnerable to disruptions. He specifically cited the Straits of Hormuz as a critical chokepoint whose security continues to affect worldwide energy prices regardless of domestic production gains.
The call for a gas tax holiday comes as Republicans push for policies aimed at lowering costs for working Americans amid persistent inflation concerns.
