Democrats Running for Senate Who Hate America
Several Democratic Senate candidates are using America's 250th anniversary to criticize the nation rather than celebrate it, reflecting polling showing only 18 percent of Democrats feel proud to be American.
As the United States marks its 250th anniversary this July, a troubling pattern has emerged among several Democratic Senate candidates who are using the semiquennial milestone not to celebrate American achievements but to air grievances and express fundamental opposition to the nation they seek to represent.
The trend reflects broader sentiment within the Democratic Party, according to Washington Examiner, with recent polling showing that only 18 percent of Democrats report feeling proud to be American. Rather than commemorating the nation’s birthday, these candidates appear to be wagering that anti-American rhetoric will resonate with voters.
In Maine, Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner came under fire for now-deleted Reddit posts in which he agreed with harsh criticism of the United States following the 2020 strike that eliminated Iranian terrorist Qassem Soleimani, the architect of operations that killed hundreds of American servicemembers. A Reddit user operating under the handle “RevolutionaryCommie” described American reaction to Soleimani’s death as ghoulish and disgusting, calling the United States a disgraceful country. Platner, posting as “P-Hustle,” responded that he could not disagree with that assessment.
The Maine candidate’s comments represent just one entry in a lengthy record of disparaging statements about America and its military personnel discovered on the platform, as Washington Examiner reports. Platner acknowledged in another Reddit post that his military service left him disillusioned, writing that after the war he stopped believing in the patriotic principles that motivated his enlistment.
In Texas, Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico has described himself as a Christian who hates Christianity. Consistent with that puzzling self-characterization, Talarico told an audience in 2019 that the American flag represents a complicated symbol for most people. He compared it unfavorably to the Christian cross, suggesting both had been co-opted and their true meanings betrayed.
For someone who professes hostility toward his own faith, finding the flag complicated may follow a certain internal logic. The reality, however, is considerably more straightforward. The American flag represents the most powerful nation in human history, whose citizens have fought and sacrificed for 250 years to defend principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans.
Michigan’s likely Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El Sayed has claimed his two daughters are growing up in an America where they possess fewer rights than their immigrant grandparents enjoyed. El Sayed has not identified which specific rights he believes his daughters lack, yet he has campaigned on abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a position that would facilitate illegal immigrants accessing those same rights.
El Sayed also accepted an endorsement from influencer Hasan Piker, who notoriously declared that America deserved the September 11 attacks. Rather than rejecting such reprehensible sentiment, El Sayed defended Piker by arguing the statement required contextual understanding. No context, however, renders such a claim acceptable.
Incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff, a Georgia Democrat, has taken a different but equally concerning approach. During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this year, Ossoff characterized President Trump’s two terms in office as symptomatic of a deeper disease within American society. Telling half of one’s constituents they are infected represents a peculiar interpretation of representative government.
According to these Democratic candidates, America stands diseased, disgraceful, and barely worth preserving. Patriots recognize a different truth. While the nation certainly possesses imperfections inherent to all human institutions, it remains the single greatest experiment in self-governance the world has witnessed, and that experiment has succeeded.
America abolished slavery, rebuilt Europe following two world wars, placed humans on the moon, and created the freest and most prosperous society in history. These accomplishments merit defending, celebrating, and preserving for future generations. Candidates unable to express genuine love and pride for the nation have no business seeking public office to represent it.
