Democrats Can’t Escape Biden Family Drama Despite Cover-Up Fatigue
Former First Lady Jill Biden drew criticism for dismissing her husband Joe Biden during a book event and claiming in her memoir she thought he was having a stroke during his debate with Trump.
According to New York Post, the incident occurred at the 92nd Street Y, where the 76-year-old was promoting her newly released memoir. Standing without a microphone in the shadows, the 83-year-old former president asked his wife: “Who do you love most in the whole world?” Appearing on stage alongside Whoopi Goldberg and dressed in a pastel skirt-suit, Jill Biden responded “Whoopi,” laughed, and turned away on her heel. The awkward exchange drew little laughter from those in attendance.
The episode comes as Jill Biden attempts to reshape the narrative around her husband’s disastrous debate performance against President Donald Trump in June 2023, which many observers believe marked the beginning of the end for Joe Biden’s reelection campaign.
In her book “View from the East Wing: A Memoir,” released Tuesday and reportedly ranked number 42 on Amazon as of Sunday, the former first lady now claims she believed her husband was suffering a stroke during that fateful debate. She writes that when Joe Biden made his infamous comment about “beating Medicare,” she wondered if he was experiencing a medical emergency or had been drugged.
Rewriting History
The former first lady’s account strains credulity for many Americans who watched Joe Biden exhibit signs of cognitive decline throughout his presidency. From shortened staircases installed on Air Force One to prevent falls, to infrequent public appearances punctuated by vacant stares and confused wandering, the signs were evident to anyone paying attention.
President Trump himself dismissed the stroke theory, questioning why Jill Biden would have taken her husband to a Waffle House immediately after the debate if she genuinely suspected such a serious medical event, as New York Post reports.
Indeed, Jill Biden’s actions that night contradict her claimed concerns. After the debate concluded at approximately 11 p.m., she brought Joe Biden to meet with moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, then took him to a campaign watch party at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Atlanta. There, she addressed him in what observers described as a patronizing, childlike tone. The couple then made a stop at Waffle House before flying to Raleigh, North Carolina, for another campaign appearance on the tarmac at 2 a.m.
Democrat Frustration Boils Over
The memoir’s release has reopened wounds within the Democratic Party at a time when party leaders are attempting to move forward. Polling data shows Joe Biden has become the least popular former Democrat president, with a net approval rating of minus-19 points according to CNN pollster Harry Enten. Jill Biden herself registers as the most unpopular Democrat first lady in recent memory, trailing Michelle Obama by 41 points.
Democratic strategists and media figures have openly criticized what they characterize as the Bidens’ selfishness in prolonging discussions about the former president’s failures. Enten notes that Biden remains an anchor to Democratic fortunes heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
The book promotion tour reveals a couple seemingly unable to accept their diminished status and the reality of Biden’s troubled presidency. While Republicans and independents have long since moved on, Democrats now find themselves grappling with a former first family that refuses to quietly exit the stage.
For four years, what some termed an “American Politburo” of handlers and staff worked to conceal Joe Biden’s declining capabilities from public view. Now, with no power remaining and Democratic patience exhausted, the carefully constructed facade has completely collapsed. Jill Biden’s memoir represents yet another attempt to reshape a narrative that most Americans have already judged for themselves.
