Dem Rep. Khanna Claims Votes to Limit Trump on Iran
A California Democratic congressman says the House has enough votes to pass a War Powers resolution limiting Trump's Iran military operations amid growing GOP concerns about economic impacts.
Representative Ro Khanna of California told NBC’s “Meet the Press” this week that growing Republican opposition to continued confrontation with Tehran has shifted the balance in Congress, according to Breitbart News. House Republican leadership abruptly canceled a scheduled vote on the War Powers resolution last week, just days after the Senate advanced a similar measure for the first time.
Republican support grows amid economic concerns
Khanna described the canceled vote as surreal, noting that leadership first delayed proceedings by 45 to 60 minutes before pulling the measure entirely. He attributed the reversal to mounting Republican concerns about the economic impact of the Iran conflict on American constituents.
According to the California Democrat, Republican members are hearing complaints from farmers about skyrocketing prices for nitrogen, ammonia, and urea fertilizers resulting from disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Rising fuel costs for gasoline and diesel are also creating pressure from voters in Republican districts.
There are a lot of Republicans who believe the war should end, Khanna stated during the broadcast.
Congressional pressure despite no formal vote
Khanna argued that even without a successful floor vote, congressional action on War Powers is applying meaningful pressure on the Trump administration to pursue diplomatic negotiations with Iran. The resolution, which he co-introduced with Representative Thomas Massie, has gained traction as the conflict’s domestic economic consequences become more apparent to lawmakers.
The congressman, who has expressed consistent support for a negotiated settlement, suggested that Congress plays a vital role in restraining executive war-making authority even when specific measures fail to reach a vote. The canceled House vote followed the Senate’s historic advancement of parallel War Powers legislation aimed at limiting military action against Iran without congressional authorization.
