Nick Bilton, who recently took the helm as executive producer of the storied news magazine program, severed Scott Pelley‘s contract after the longtime correspondent allegedly disrupted his first staff meeting with what Bilton characterized as a hostile and contemptuous outburst.

Details of the incident emerged through a termination letter from Bilton to Pelley, which was obtained and shared by Dylan Byers, a founding partner and senior correspondent at Puck.

In the letter, Bilton recounted how he had approached his new role with enthusiasm and respect for the program’s legacy journalists. He revealed that one of his first actions was reaching out to Pelley directly to arrange a conversation and dinner, seeking to build a collaborative relationship.

Bilton wrote that joining 60 Minutes represented the pinnacle of his career and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with those who built what he called the most important television journalism brand in American history. Despite being new to the program, he emphasized his extensive background in investigative journalism and storytelling.

The attempted outreach was rebuffed. Instead of accepting the olive branch, Pelley chose what Bilton described as an ambush during the executive producer’s inaugural staff meeting. According to the letter, Pelley hijacked the gathering to publicly attack Bilton’s qualifications, intentions, and character with what Bilton termed remarkable incivility and contempt.

Even after the confrontation, Bilton indicated he remained open to reconciliation and finding a productive working relationship. Those hopes were dashed when Pelley made clear he had no interest in cooperation.

Writing formally on behalf of CBS News, Inc., Bilton informed Pelley that his employment was terminated for cause, effective immediately.

The personnel changes at 60 Minutes represent a broader restructuring effort, as Breitbart News reports. CBS News chief Bari Weiss replaced the program’s previous executive producer Tanya Simon with Bilton as part of leadership changes at the network.

The confrontation during Bilton’s staff meeting has been characterized as emblematic of deeper cultural issues within legacy media institutions, where established figures sometimes resist new leadership and evolving editorial directions.
