Study Claims ‘Latine’ Underrepresented on Television
A left-wing advocacy group is pushing Hollywood to increase Hispanic immigrant representation on TV while promoting "Latine" as a gender-neutral term after "Latinx" failed.
The report, titled “Change the Narrative, Change the World,” claims that representation of so-called “Latine” immigrants has dropped to just 23 percent across scripted television programs, according to Breitbart News. The study was conducted in partnership with the University of Southern California’s Norman Lear Center.
Researchers examined 201 immigrant characters across 80 episodes from 62 scripted series that aired between July 2023 and June 2025. The figures show a sharp decline from 50 percent representation recorded in 2020, while Hispanic immigrants comprise 44 percent of all immigrants living in the United States.
Another Manufactured Term from the Progressive Left
The term “Latine” functions as yet another gender-neutral alternative to the traditional Spanish words “Latino” and “Latina.” It follows the disastrous rollout of “Latinx,” which was soundly rejected by Hispanic Americans who resented the linguistic colonization of their language by progressive activists.
The study reveals that programs such as “FBI” and “FBI: Most Wanted” account for a significant portion of Hispanic immigrant characters in the sample. Without this franchise, representation would plummet to just 17 percent, the report acknowledges.
Identity Politics Dressed as Research
The complaint focuses specifically on immigrant representation rather than Hispanic representation broadly — meaning researchers are literally counting immigrant characters, then counting Hispanic immigrant characters specifically, inventing new terminology, and presenting the results as evidence of systemic underrepresentation.
This approach raises an obvious question: how can “Latines” be underrepresented on television when the category itself is a manufactured construct rejected by the very communities it claims to describe?
Real Groups Actually Underrepresented
While activists manufacture grievances over fictional demographic categories, genuinely underrepresented groups receive no attention from Hollywood diversity monitors. Conservative Christians, for instance, rarely appear on screen unless portrayed as villains or backwards obstacles to progress.
The timing of the reported decline may also reflect broader immigration enforcement trends, as enhanced deportation efforts under stricter border policies have affected immigrant populations nationwide.
