NATO Chief Rutte Praises Trump’s Iran Deal as Security Win
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised President Trump's Iran agreement and pledged alliance support for Strait of Hormuz navigation, with UK and France ready to lead security efforts.
Speaking at NATO headquarters on Wednesday ahead of a defence ministers’ meeting, Rutte described the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as a major breakthrough for international security, according to Breitbart News.
The NATO chief stated that American action to eliminate the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran and degrade its ballistic missile capabilities has enhanced security for the entire alliance. He emphasized that the Trump administration’s deal has created a path to permanently prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Rutte confirmed that NATO allies, particularly the United Kingdom and France, are ready to lead efforts to secure the strategic Strait of Hormuz waterway, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies typically flow. While the Persian Gulf region falls outside NATO’s traditional area of responsibility, the Secretary General made clear the alliance stands prepared to assist if requested and if such involvement would advance regional stability.
The former Dutch Prime Minister, who was selected for the NATO leadership position in part due to his strong working relationship with President Trump, noted that European allies have already begun substantial pre-deployment of military assets to the region over the past two months. These include demining equipment, radar systems, and other advanced technologies.
Rutte stressed that NATO’s involvement would depend on whether allied members conducting the operation determine that broader alliance participation would be beneficial. He indicated the organization remains flexible and supportive of whatever approach best serves the mission’s success.
The Secretary General also addressed the security situation in Europe, where NATO borders the active conflict zone in Ukraine. He highlighted progress by European member states in increasing their defence expenditures while cautioning that President Trump expects allies to present detailed and credible plans for further improvements at an upcoming major NATO conference later this year.
Rutte’s remarks reflect NATO’s transition into what observers have termed the alliance’s third era, characterized by increased European defence responsibility and a recalibrated transatlantic partnership under the Trump administration’s strategic priorities.
