Socialist Ex-Belgian PM Di Rupo Faces Corruption Charges
Belgian socialist Elio Di Rupo faces criminal accusations of corruption and influence peddling over a 2018 real estate deal involving shares in Land Invest and the scandal-plagued Nethys-Publifin group.
The former Prime Minister and current Member of the European Parliament stands accused of using his political influence to facilitate a questionable deal involving shares in the property firm Land Invest, according to Brussels Signal.
Dominique Janne, a real estate developer, and his company Novo Holding filed a criminal complaint with civil party constitution on June 10. The complaint alleges that Di Rupo leveraged his position to push through the sale of Land Invest shares held by Ogeo, the pension fund linked to the scandal-plagued Nethys-Publifin group, while allegedly helping to conceal irregularities that harmed both the Belgian state and public pension funds.
The Nethys-Publifin Scandal Background
Nethys functioned as the operational division of Publifin, a major intermunicipal holding entity in Wallonia that oversaw energy distribution, telecommunications, and assorted public services. Between 2017 and 2018, the organisation became the epicentre of a major political firestorm when it was revealed that senior executives with close Socialist Party connections had granted themselves and political allies extravagant severance packages and bonuses totaling tens of millions of euros, often with minimal accountability.
Ogeo managed retirement funds for employees within these public companies. The current allegations against Di Rupo focus on how shares in Land Invest owned by Ogeo were sold under circumstances now being scrutinised for potential corruption and influence trafficking.
Secret Recordings Emerge
The accusations are bolstered by clandestine audio recordings made by Luc Joris, Di Rupo’s former personal physician and a longtime associate who held multiple public positions through Socialist Party appointments, as Brussels Signal reports.
Investigative outlet Nationale 4 released the explosive recordings, in which Joris portrays himself as an influential “fixer” within Di Rupo’s inner circle. He brags about his connections and describes securing subsidies for his anti-tobacco foundation through then-Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, allegedly despite lacking proper entitlement.
Joris also claims Di Rupo routinely avoided discussing sensitive topics by phone as a security measure. While he makes broad assertions about irregularities in public organisations where he served on Socialist quotas, the recordings contain limited concrete specifics.
Di Rupo Denies All Charges
Di Rupo has categorically rejected the allegations. In a forceful statement issued on June 11, the former Prime Minister branded the claims as scandalous and entirely without foundation. He announced filing formal complaints for defamation and calumny against both Janne and Joris, suggesting the recordings are part of a blackmail scheme.
Di Rupo disclosed that he had already lodged a police complaint in March 2024 after receiving blackmail threats from a French telephone number demanding he halt what the caller described as threats from Joris. He maintains he was the target of a blackmail operation involving these very recordings, which he says he turned over to authorities at that time.
Di Rupo stated he has nothing to conceal and will defend his reputation with full determination. He characterised the affair as a calculated effort to tarnish both his standing and that of the Socialist Party.
Political Fallout
Di Rupo remains one of the most powerful figures in the French-speaking Socialist Party, having served as Prime Minister from 2011 to 2014. He currently sits as an MEP and holds the position of honorary president of the PS.
The complaint has sparked immediate political responses. The liberal MR party has demanded Di Rupo appear before the Walloon Parliament, while multiple opposition voices are calling for a comprehensive parliamentary investigation.
This latest controversy adds to an extended pattern of scandals surrounding the PS in Wallonia. The party has repeatedly faced allegations of clientelism, questionable public appointments, and opaque financial practices after decades of political dominance in the French-speaking region.
