Bulgaria Buys 7 Minehunters to Secure Black Sea Shipping Routes
Bulgaria's parliament approved acquiring seven minehunter vessels from Belgium and the Netherlands to strengthen NATO's Black Sea mine-clearing operations following increased threats from Russia's Ukraine invasion.
The Bulgarian parliament on Wednesday ratified agreements covering the transfer of the specialized naval vessels, which will significantly enhance the country’s maritime security capabilities in the strategically vital Black Sea region.
NATO Black Sea Security Initiative
The acquisition follows commitments made at the NATO summit in July, where Bulgaria joined Romania and Turkey in agreeing to expand a joint task force dedicated to clearing naval mines and protecting critical infrastructure in the Black Sea.
The three NATO member states established the de-mining task force in 2024 in response to the growing threat of floating mines following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Black Sea is shared by these three NATO allies alongside Georgia, Russia, and Ukraine.
Details of the Transfer Agreement
Under the approved arrangements, Bulgaria will receive three vessels from the Netherlands specifically equipped to locate and destroy mines and mine-like objects. A separate trilateral transfer agreement between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria covers the remaining four ships.
The Netherlands has committed to restoring the technical capabilities and enhancing the operational capacity of three vessels before transferring ownership. Bulgaria will cover the costs of repair and restoration work to bring all seven minehunters to NATO operational readiness standards.
Strategic Enhancement of Naval Capabilities
Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov emphasized the importance of the acquisition before lawmakers approved the deal, noting that Bulgaria already operates three vessels of the same type and that the additional seven will substantially strengthen national capabilities.
The defense minister highlighted the effective coordination within the mine countermeasures group established with Turkey and Romania, which is actively working to clear maritime areas across the three countries’ territorial waters.
The comprehensive agreement includes not only the vessels themselves but also crew training programs, spare parts, and additional equipment necessary for full operational deployment.
