Bill White spent approximately ninety minutes with Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot in Brussels on August 31, emerging from the meeting with no indication he would moderate his online commentary.
Speaking to commercial broadcaster VTM before the meeting, White adopted a conciliatory tone, saying he looked forward to discussing important bilateral matters with Prévot, including plans for a new US embassy and economic cooperation. However, he made clear his frustration at being summoned over content published on what he described as a personal social media account.
Prévot’s office issued a statement after the meeting making clear that public attacks targeting Belgian officials by name would not be tolerated. The foreign minister warned that further provocations risked unnecessary escalation and would prove counterproductive to relations between the two countries.
Ambassador Targets Health Minister Over Anti-Alcohol Push
The diplomatic incident erupted on August 28 when White posted what appeared to be an AI-generated image of Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke to his Instagram story. The image depicted Vandenbroucke on a mock cigar box warning label, suggesting he damaged all forms of joy in life, accompanied by the caption asking who Belgium’s biggest loser was.
The post took direct aim at Vandenbroucke’s campaign to strengthen health warnings on alcohol advertising. The minister wants to replace current messaging about alcohol abuse with a starker declaration that alcohol damages health. Belgian brewers have formally objected to the proposal.
The proposed regulatory change has been submitted to the European Commission under EU technical standards procedures, which permit member states and industry groups to challenge national rules that could fragment the single market. Spanish authorities and European wine and brewing associations have raised concerns that the measures would force producers across member states to redesign labelling and packaging at considerable expense.
Second Summons This Year for Trump Envoy
This marks the second time in 2026 that White has been called to the Belgian foreign ministry for official rebuke. In February, he was summoned after publicly characterising an Antwerp investigation into three Jewish ritual circumcisers as anti-Semitic and calling on Vandenbroucke to intervene in the matter.
White, a Trump donor who received Senate confirmation for the ambassadorial post in late 2025, is among several US envoys in Europe who have drawn official complaints from host governments. Charles Kushner was summoned by French authorities in February over his public remarks concerning the death of a right-wing activist in Lyon.
The ambassador’s defiant stance following the Belgian rebuke signals he intends to continue using social media to voice opinions on Belgian domestic policy, setting the stage for potential further friction in bilateral relations.
