Virginia Gov. Spanberger Ripped Over Ignored ICE Detainer Before Sex Assault
A Salvadoran national illegally in the U.S. was arrested for sexual assault in Virginia after accumulating 14 charges this year while local officials refused ICE detainer requests.
Cristobal Liobardo Vasquez-Sanchez, 25, now faces charges of sexual battery and object sexual penetration by force following his May 22 arrest in Arlington County, according to New York Post. The illegal alien accumulated 14 separate criminal charges in the current year alone before the alleged sexual assault took place.
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that federal immigration authorities had previously issued a detainer request for Vasquez-Sanchez, but that request was denied by local Virginia officials.
Democratic Governor’s Policy Blocks ICE Cooperation
The case has put a spotlight on policies implemented by Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger, who directed Virginia state agencies to cease cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Under her administration, the state now demands judicial warrants for ICE operations, a requirement immigration law experts have called legally unnecessary and operationally obstructive.
Merely days before the alleged sexual assault, Spanberger issued an executive order that created additional barriers for federal immigration enforcement officers attempting to operate within Virginia’s borders.
Parking Garage Attack
According to local reports cited by New York Post, Vasquez-Sanchez encountered his victim in a parking garage stairwell in Arlington, where the alleged sexual assault occurred. The victim managed to escape and locate assistance, while the suspect initially fled the scene before being apprehended by authorities.
Extensive Criminal Record Ignored
The suspect’s criminal activity throughout the year reveals a pattern of escalating offenses that local authorities repeatedly failed to address with meaningful detention. In January, Vasquez-Sanchez was arrested for violating pretrial release conditions while already out on bond from another criminal matter. He was charged with larceny the following month.
On April 15, he was arrested and charged with public intoxication, assault and battery, and assault on a law enforcement officer. Just five days later, he was arrested again for violating pretrial release conditions.
Between April 26 and May 19, Vasquez-Sanchez was charged with public intoxication on four separate occasions. The May 19 incident also resulted in charges of disorderly conduct and fleeing from law enforcement.
On December 31, 2025, he faced larceny charges, and on July 19, 2026, he was charged with assault and battery, destruction of property with intent, and public intoxication.
Despite this extensive catalog of criminal charges, Vasquez-Sanchez was never held in pretrial detention and was released back onto Virginia streets after each arrest.
Federal Officials Condemn State Policy
ICE has now lodged another detainer against the suspect following his latest arrest. Acting Assistant DHS Secretary Lauren Bis issued a sharp criticism of Governor Spanberger’s policies in comments to Fox News Digital.
Governor Spanberger’s decision to end cooperation with ICE in Virginia has allowed criminals to be released back into American communities, Bis stated, adding that when politicians prevent local law enforcement from working with DHS, federal officers must maintain a more visible presence to locate and apprehend criminals released from local custody.
Bis went further, accusing Spanberger of allowing the release of pedophiles, rapists, gang members, and murderers onto Virginia streets while DHS law enforcement officers risk their lives to arrest these dangerous criminals.
Governor’s Office Defends Record
A spokesperson for Governor Spanberger defended the administration’s position in a statement to Fox News Digital, claiming that the governor has consistently stated violent criminals in the country illegally should face full prosecution and deportation. The spokesperson noted that Virginia’s Department of Corrections continues notifying ICE when foreign-born individuals enter state custody, though acknowledged this particular suspect remains in local custody.
The statement emphasized that Virginia state law enforcement agencies continue assisting federal authorities through task forces and ongoing interagency cooperation, and highlighted Spanberger’s background as a former federal law enforcement officer who pursued child predators.
