New Task Force Tackles Road Safety After Illegal Alien Crashes

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy unveiled the Joint Task Force Crossroads of America on Monday, according to Washington Examiner. The announcement was made alongside Angel Family members, Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Derek Barrs, White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud Vice Chairman Andrew Ferguson, and several U.S. attorneys.

The initiative comes in response to mounting concerns over sanctuary jurisdictions issuing commercial driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, many of whom lack English proficiency and knowledge of American traffic regulations. Secretary Mullin condemned sanctuary politicians for enabling what he described as a dangerous trend that has claimed American lives.

Thanks to the recklessness of sanctuary politicians, there is a growing and alarming trend of illegal aliens obtaining commercial driving credentials despite failing basic safety requirements, Mullin stated. He emphasized that the administration would prioritize American safety by removing dangerous drivers from the roads and deporting those in the country illegally.

Federal data indicates that 30 Americans died in collisions involving illegal immigrant truck drivers in 2025 alone. During Operation Highway Shield, conducted between July 28 and July 30, authorities removed 766 unsafe truck drivers from service, as Washington Examiner previously reported. Among those, 51 were illegal immigrants, with 36 failing English language proficiency tests required for safe commercial vehicle operation.

Transportation Secretary Duffy described each death caused by an unqualified illegal trucker as a completely preventable tragedy. He praised President Trump’s leadership in coordinating what he called an unprecedented crackdown spanning fraudulent training schools, negligent state licensing agencies, and criminal enterprises exploiting the commercial driving system.

Multi-Agency Federal Operation

The Joint Task Force Crossroads of America represents a coordinated effort between the Department of Justice, Department of Transportation, and Department of Homeland Security. Each agency has been assigned specific enforcement responsibilities to address different aspects of the commercial driver fraud network.

DHS will conduct a synchronized single-day sweep targeting more than 200 training schools across 23 states. The Department of Transportation is launching a nationwide audit of third-party commercial driver’s license skills testing facilities and state oversight mechanisms. DOJ will spearhead the overall task force coordination.

Additional enforcement actions include the removal of 110 commercial driver’s license schools connected to more than 5,000 drivers who failed English language proficiency requirements. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations will support investigations into CDL-related businesses and training facilities suspected of facilitating fraud.

The multi-state partnership aims to strengthen border security while restoring integrity to America’s trucking industry by targeting criminal networks that enable unqualified and unvetted foreign nationals to operate large commercial vehicles on public highways.

DHS characterized the initiative as the Trump administration’s most aggressive effort in history to eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse in the trucking sector. By combining regulatory authority with federal law enforcement operations, officials say they are taking decisive action to protect American motorists from dangerous and illegal drivers.
