Laughable! When Portosalte Talks about Toxicity

Aris Portosalte’s early journalism roots trace back to the controversial ‘Avriani’ paper in the 1980s, revealing ties to toxic media practices he later condemns, exposing media hypocrisy and political entanglements.

It is widely known in journalistic circles that Aris Portosalte made his first journalistic steps at Avriani of Kouris during the first half of the 1980s, when Andreas Papandreou’s PASOK was at its peak and Avriani was practically its official journalistic organ.

If one searches for articles or reports by Aris Portosalte from that period, they will find nothing. Neither in the National Library nor in the extensive archive of the Hellenic Parliament. One might think there is a national conspiracy in his favor, preventing anyone from seeing how he served one of the dirtiest publications in the post-junta journalistic history of Greece. A publication that he himself today would call “populist” and “toxic.”

Most likely, nothing like that is happening, but for a strange reason, even Wikipedia, the last refuge of every desperate researcher, states that “He has been a journalist since 1984. He started working in newspapers in 1989.” Nothing could be more inaccurate! In the archive of the Hellenic Parliament, one can find multiple reports by Aris Portosalte in “Eleftheros Typos” at least since 27/2/1984.

In fact, for a report he did on May 6, 1984, for Eleftheros Typos titled “Mission to Evros – United in Abandonment,” Aris Portosalte was awarded a “Commendation” within the framework of the Ipekci awards. You see, attempts at Greek-Turkish rapprochement and friendship had already begun by then. Of course, this specific one did not go very well since when Aris Portosalte was to receive the award, the Sismik crisis had already occurred. Therefore, it is unknown if he ever collected the award. Certainly, though, he deserved it with the tear-jerking scenario he presented in his report, with Greek farmers having lunch together at midday with their Turkish colleagues. “We brought the cheese and olives, and they brought the raki,” they said. In other words, once again, we were the ones left short.

As for the affectionate farmers, they got a bitter taste of the fruits of their camaraderie when in 2020, in the area of Nea Vyssa and Kastania, the Turks attempted to exploit immigration to attack us. I don’t recall exactly, to be honest, but at those times Portosalte must have even brought a priest into the studio to perform a blessing so that the good Lord would watch over our little Prime Minister who saved us from disaster.

Returning to the past, Aris Portosalte had been “outed” by Avriani precisely during the days of the Sismik crisis escalated from March 26 to 29. Specifically, on Saturday, March 21, 1987, Avriani published the following:

“Avriani” broke the monopolistic barrier of the Union of Editors, which for years did not allow journalism to be practiced except by those her people wanted. From the moment of its first issue, “Avriani” became a practical school of journalism.

We publish a list of young people who “came out” of this Avriani School and have now been “distributed” to other newspapers.

In the list the newspaper published, Aris Portosalte appears, as do many other well-known journalists who have carefully hidden “under the rug” the “school” from which they graduated, where they started their careers. Otherwise, of course, Portosalte began his career in… 1989.

And once again, we will disappoint you, because if you noticed in the first image we showed, Mr. Portosalte was also a journalist for the newspaper “24 Hours” of the famous – at least then – tycoon, but also government frontman of Andreas Papandreou’s administration, Giorgos Koskotas, who had taken on the role of laundering the green storm, which from the first term had ensured to plunder the state coffers, pay allowances with borrowed money, and build the deep PASOK state, that even Kyriakos Mitsotakis had to appoint half of PASOK into his governments to control.

I could deepen my research, but I will leave it for another time. Let me tell you the reason for it: Mr. Portosalte cannot accuse anyone of “toxicity and populism,” not even the current PASOK officials like the neo-PASOK Mr. Farantouris. And why? Because he has served toxicity and populism from their most important positions and through the “flags” of the “toxic and populist movement.” You, Mr. Portosalte, cannot portray yourself here as deputy government spokesperson and pretend to be a journalist. You cannot accuse others of “populism” and “toxicity” when you have served in entities that introduced “toxicity” into journalism in this country. And I am not only talking about Avriani…

At some point, I will also deal with other high priests of “non-toxicity” and “anti-populism” that Mr. Portosalte has served.

Furious, Aris Portosalte got up and left the studio!

As soon as Farantouris cornered him about the Mitsotakis – Tzavellas organization!
