Dem Rep Claims Lifting Iran Blockade Will Pressure Tehran to Act
Ohio Democrat Greg Landsman suggested lifting the U.S. blockade on Iran would create international pressure on Tehran to reciprocate, while criticizing Trump for lacking congressional authorization.
The remarks came during an appearance on CNN News Central Tuesday, where Landsman fielded questions about White House policy toward Iran and the role of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in shaping American military decisions, according to Breitbart News.
When asked by CNN host John Berman how President Trump might respond if the Israeli leader pressed him to resume military operations against Iran, Landsman suggested such pressure was unnecessary.
The Ohio congressman asserted that Trump has already reinitiated military action independently, describing the president’s approach as solitary and lacking congressional authorization. He criticized what he characterized as an absence of strategic clarity from the administration.
Landsman went on to argue that ending the U.S. blockade would create leverage against Iran’s own maritime restrictions. If we end the blockade, it puts pressure on Iran, global pressure, to end the blockade, he stated, referring to Iranian actions he believes could be reversed through international influence.
The Democratic lawmaker emphasized that Trump operates without formal backing from Congress and has not secured a vote authorizing continued military engagement. He placed responsibility squarely on the president to devise an exit strategy from the current conflict posture.
Landsman’s comments reflect growing unease among some congressional Democrats regarding executive military authority and the scope of U.S. operations in the Middle East without legislative approval.
