Woke San Francisco Schools Chief Embarrasses City Nationally
San Francisco's school superintendent refused to answer congressional questions about controversial curriculum policies while her district faces a DOJ investigation and low test scores.
Maria Su, the city’s top education official, appeared before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce but repeatedly dodged inquiries about her district’s ideologically-driven teaching materials, according to New York Post.
When asked whether she supported curriculum that allegedly compared parents who rejected schools’ COVID mandates to white families who fled desegregated schools in the 1960s, Su would not provide an answer. She similarly declined to state her position on district guidance that reportedly equated refusing to use a transgender student’s preferred pronouns with physical assault.
The superintendent also deflected when questioned about whether biological males should be permitted in girls’ locker rooms.
Federal Investigation Underway
Su’s district is among those currently under investigation by the Department of Justice for potentially circumventing parental notification and opt-out laws. Her unwillingness to defend or even explain the policies implemented under her leadership raises questions about whether legal concerns motivated her silence.
The performance before Congress highlighted deeper issues within San Francisco’s public education system. Despite the district’s apparent preoccupation with progressive social policies, academic outcomes tell a troubling story.
Academic Performance Suffers
Only 53 percent of San Francisco Unified students demonstrate proficiency in language arts, while an even lower 46 percent show proficiency in mathematics, according to data from October.
Meanwhile, a district report revealed that 30 percent of San Francisco public school students identify as queer or questioning, with 6 percent identifying as transgender or “gender questioning.” Notably, one presenter of that report listed pronouns as “She/Ella/Meow.”
Classroom Hours Diverted from Core Education
Every hour devoted to immersing students in ideological instruction represents time not spent teaching science, literature, or fundamental life skills such as financial literacy. Parents increasingly view public schools as indoctrination centers advancing adult political agendas rather than institutions focused on genuine learning.
If districts are bypassing parental notification requirements related to transgender instruction or other sensitive material, such actions represent a serious breach of trust between schools and families.
Su’s congressional testimony offered no clarity on these concerns, instead exemplifying why many American parents have lost confidence in public education. Her failure to provide straightforward answers suggests either an inability to defend indefensible policies or a deliberate strategy to avoid accountability for decisions imposed on impressionable children.
