Wikipedia Denies Leftist Bias in New Promotional Campaign
The Wikimedia Foundation released videos defending Wikipedia against bias claims despite mounting evidence of left-wing slant and exclusion of conservative viewpoints.
The videos, part of the foundation’s “A Wiki Minute” series released in July, claim to debunk what they characterize as myths about the online encyclopedia, according to Breitbart News. The clips address allegations of political bias, defend the site’s use by students, and promote Wikipedia’s reliability compared to artificial intelligence sources.
Marina Ramos-Smith, Associate Creative Director at the Wikimedia Foundation’s Brand Studio, announced the videos on July 14, describing them as tackling the biggest misconceptions about Wikipedia. She stated the videos are shared with press and donors, with topics selected based on frequently raised questions to the Foundation.
The video titled “Does Wikipedia push a political agenda?” flatly denies bias claims, asserting the platform provides neutral and reliable information from multiple sources. The narrator claims Wikipedia editors come to agreement on representing claims while following policies requiring a neutral point of view and prohibiting personal opinions.
Notably absent from the video is any acknowledgement of extensive documentation showing left-wing bias on the platform. Larry Sanger, Wikipedia’s own co-founder, has repeatedly criticized the site for political bias and was himself banned from Wikipedia last month after attempting reforms to allow greater ideological diversity.
Wikipedia’s verifiability policy restricts which sources can be cited, with a sourcing blacklist excluding most conservative news outlets. Editors have exploited neutrality policies to suppress information from major conservative media outlets, including those who verified the authenticity of Hunter Biden’s laptop before the 2020 election even as related Wikipedia articles saw traffic spikes ahead of the vote.
Recent controversies include allegations of anti-Israeli bias, drawing criticism from Congress and the Trump Administration. Wikipedia now states as fact that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, a change from initially treating such claims as allegations. The shift followed discussions dominated by anti-Israeli editors, with administrators who approved the changes posting anti-Israeli commentary on social media.
One administrator called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to stop what he termed ethnic cleansing in Gaza. Co-founder Jimmy Wales faced severe backlash after criticizing these editorial changes.
The promotional videos make no mention of these controversies. Instead, the video description dismisses bias allegations as myth, claiming Wikipedia allows everyone to share knowledge as long as they follow established guidelines. Previous videos in the series have vigorously defended Wikipedia’s reliability while emphasizing its volunteer-run status.
Ramos-Smith stated in her announcement that the videos have been proven to build understanding and affinity for the Foundation and its affiliated sites. The videos have been posted to Wikipedia’s official YouTube account and Wikimedia Commons, with versions available in different aspect ratios. While the latest releases are English-only, older videos have been translated into multiple languages.
Only one video in the series acknowledges legitimate criticism of Wikipedia, specifically addressing equity issues using left-wing ideological framing.
