Vandals Sabotage Trump’s Freedom 250 Event With Fuel Contamination
Vandals cut a fuel line at a Trump administration event site on the National Mall, causing fuel to leak into underground cisterns and prompting an emergency cleanup, organizers said.
A generator fuel line installed for temporary lighting ahead of a May 17 religious event was intentionally cut by vandals, causing fuel to seep into underground cisterns beneath the Washington, DC landmark, as New York Post reports. The incident marks the latest in a series of attacks targeting equipment set up for Freedom 250 celebrations.
Rachel Reisner, a spokeswoman for Freedom 250, confirmed the sabotage and explained that the temporary lighting had been installed ahead of the “Rededicate 250” event. She emphasized that event organizers and vendors responded immediately to the tampering, coordinating with the National Park Service to fully remediate the contamination.
The Freedom 250 team mobilized within minutes of discovering the damaged fuel line, according to Reisner, and law enforcement authorities have been notified about the vandalism. She stressed that organizers take their stewardship of the National Mall seriously.
Initial reports suggested that 30 gallons of fuel had leaked beneath the National Mall, though sources told New York Post that the actual amount appeared significantly lower. Officials confirmed that drinking water was not affected by the leak.
The targeted lighting equipment had been installed last month for “Rededicate 250,” a day of prayer and music featuring prominent Trump administration figures including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and House Speaker Mike Johnson.
An environmental remediation company’s mobile command center was observed at the site earlier this week, working to address the contamination.
Freedom 250 was established by the Trump administration as a public-private partnership to oversee the 250th anniversary celebrations of the Declaration of Independence. The initiative operates separately from America250, a nonprofit created by Congress a decade ago.
Administration officials indicated they have heightened security measures ahead of the upcoming semiquincentennial events following this and other incidents of vandalism.
A spokesperson for the US Department of the Interior condemned the sabotage as unhinged behavior that will not be tolerated, vowing that such acts would not stop the administration’s work celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The Interior Department spokesperson also praised the administration’s broader efforts to revitalize the capital, stating that Washington has never been safer or more beautiful thanks to President Trump’s leadership.
The National Park Service has not yet responded to requests for comment on the incident.
