President Trump delivered a controversial speech at the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner, addressing a previous assassination attempt while announcing his intention to seek a fourth term in 2028.
The event took place three months after a gunman breached security in an assassination attempt targeting Trump and several Cabinet members at the original dinner. In her analysis for Washington Examiner, Molly Parks noted that Trump addressed the attack both solemnly and with characteristic irreverence during his hour-long address.
Trump opened with a call for unity against political violence, stating that the rescheduled gathering demonstrated American resilience. In this country, we believe in freedom of speech, he declared, emphasizing that no armed attacker would undermine democratic debate.
Changed Tone, New Material
The president acknowledged scrapping his originally prepared remarks, which he described as far more critical of journalists. He joked that attendees were fortunate the April dinner was interrupted, suggesting his initial speech would have been devastating to their reputations. Trump also quipped that when security personnel shouted warnings during the attack, rapper Nicki Minaj, a recent Trump ally, began dancing.
The president thanked Secret Service agent Victor Gonzales, who neutralized the April gunman, while weaving security gratitude throughout his comedy routine.
2028 Speculation and Term Limits
Trump generated headlines by announcing his intention to seek what he called a fourth presidential term in 2028. He donned a bright red “Trump 2028” cap while claiming he had already won three elections, repeating his disputed assertion that the 2020 contest was rigged against him.
The remarks appeared partly satirical, as Trump has recently signaled support for Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential 2028 successors.
More seriously, the president endorsed congressional term limits, citing concerns about aging lawmakers on Capitol Hill. He illustrated the point with a crude joke about an elderly senator receiving a text message from his wife.

Some of the evening’s tensest moments came when Trump singled out individual journalists by name and appearance. He targeted CNN anchor and White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins, dismissing an award she received at the dinner as fraudulent and making comments about her looks that included a comparison to transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The remarks drew audible groans from the audience.
