Trump Warns After Socialists Sweep NY Congressional Primaries
President Trump warned that New York will deteriorate further after two socialist candidates endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani won Democratic congressional primaries on platforms opposing Israel.
According to New York Post, Trump took to Truth Social to criticize what he described as a wave of communist candidates gaining ground in failing blue states. The votes seem to have them doing quite well against each other, Trump wrote, adding that history has proven states run by such candidates will only worsen.
In a separate early Wednesday post, Trump declared that America will never become a communist country.
The president’s comments came after state Assemblywoman Claire Valdez handily defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, while former Mamdani campaign staffer Darializa Avila Chevalier delivered the night’s biggest surprise by unseating five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat, who leads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Both victors ran in heavily Democratic districts, meaning Tuesday’s primaries effectively decided the general election. The results virtually guarantee the House of Representatives will gain two additional card-carrying Democratic Socialists of America members when the 120th Congress convenes in January.
Presently, Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan are the only DSA members serving in Congress.
Anti-Israel Platform Central to Campaigns
Both Valdez and Avila Chevalier campaigned on strongly anti-Israel platforms, advocating for complete divestment from Israeli companies and terminating American arms sales to the nation, as New York Post reports.
Valdez has additionally supported seizing property from landlords. Chevalier has stated that criminal illegal aliens should not face deportation and has refused to condemn the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attack against Israel.
DSA Gains Ground in State Politics
The New York branch of DSA celebrated a successful night in state legislative primaries as well, with seven of eight endorsed candidates on track to win. This would increase their Albany representation to fourteen from nine.
Meanwhile, Mamdani solidified his status as a kingmaker in city politics after former city Comptroller Brad Lander, another anti-Israel candidate, defeated Representative Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th Congressional District by a two-to-one margin.
Trump Celebrates Goldman Defeat
Trump did not hide his satisfaction at Goldman’s loss, describing the congressman who served as lead counsel for the president’s first impeachment in 2019 as weak and pathetic. Writing on Truth Social, Trump celebrated that people rejected Goldman for illegally targeting him, declaring the congressman finally gone.
