Trump walks out mid-interview on ‘Meet the Press
President Trump abruptly ended an NBC "Meet the Press" interview after clashing with host Kristen Welker over his unsubstantiated election fraud claims.
The incident occurred during a recording of the network’s flagship program “Meet the Press” hosted by Kristen Welker. Trump made fraud claims regarding both the 2020 presidential election and ongoing California primary vote counting. When Welker pressed him for evidence to support his assertions, the president ended the conversation and left the set.
The interview had been filmed in a barn in Wisconsin and aired on Sunday. NBC reported that technical difficulties and rain noise on the metal roof had caused multiple interruptions during the taping.
Iran War and Campaign Promises Discussed
Earlier portions of the interview covered the ongoing conflict with Iran. Trump defended American military action and rejected accusations that he had broken his campaign pledge to avoid new wars. He argued that the United States must prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, insisting the engagement does not constitute an endless war.
Welker also questioned the president about a now-abandoned plan to establish a 1.8 billion dollar compensation fund for allegedly politically persecuted individuals. Critics had warned the fund could potentially benefit persons prosecuted for their involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol incident.
Confrontation Escalates Over Fraud Claims
The exchange grew contentious when Trump reiterated his position that the 2020 election was rigged. He additionally referenced California, where primary votes were still being tallied, claiming fraud was occurring. When Welker asked whether he possessed evidence for these allegations, Trump responded that all he needed to do was look and listen.
After Welker stated that did not constitute proof, Trump accused the moderator of being corrupt. When she denied the charge, the president told her she was either corrupt or stupid. Moments later, he terminated the interview, telling production staff he had given enough time and walking off location.
Further Interview Promised
Following the broadcast, Welker revealed she had spoken with Trump again afterward. Both acknowledged the challenging circumstances created by the rain during filming. Trump has already agreed to another interview with “Meet the Press” at a future date, she confirmed.
