Donald Trump declared that numerous European countries are currently discussing the implementation of digital services taxes, with some close to finalizing such measures. The President stated that any nation imposing this tax will immediately face a complete doubling of tariffs on goods exported to the United States.

Britain currently operates a digital services tax that was introduced in 2020. The levy stands at two per cent and applies to revenues generated by some of America’s largest technology corporations operating within UK territory.
Major American firms affected by the existing British tax include Apple, Meta—which owns Facebook and Instagram—and Alphabet’s Google. These companies represent some of the most valuable corporations in the global economy.
The Labour Government now faces a significant decision regarding whether to maintain or expand the digital services tax in light of Trump’s ultimatum.
