Trump Takes on Fraud in Government Spending Programs
A new survey shows 81 percent of voters across party lines support tackling government fraud as a way to reduce inflation and the rising cost of living in America.
The polling data, gathered by McLaughlin & Associates for Tea Party Patriots Action in mid-May from 1,000 general election voters, shows that cutting government fraud ranks as a top priority for Americans struggling with inflation, according to Breitbart News.
When presented with the premise that fraud in government programs constitutes theft from taxpayers and that stopping such corruption should be a national priority, 81 percent of respondents agreed. The support cut across party lines, with 90 percent of Republicans, 78 percent of Independents, and 74 percent of Democrats backing the position.
The survey highlighted a critical gap in current oversight: the absence of any permanent system to prevent the hundreds of billions of dollars in fraud documented annually by government watchdogs. When asked whether Congress should mandate a permanent fraud detection and prevention system to catch abuse before taxpayer money is spent, 83 percent agreed.
Fraud and Inflation: The Direct Connection
Perhaps most significantly, 70 percent of survey participants agreed that cutting government fraud represents the most direct path to reducing prices for all Americans, given that many economists identify higher government spending as a primary driver of inflation.
President Donald Trump addressed this issue head-on in March by establishing an anti-fraud task force through executive order. Vice President J.D. Vance was appointed to lead the initiative and has pursued the mission aggressively, recently convening state attorneys general at the White House to coordinate enforcement efforts.
The executive order explicitly connects fraud to higher consumer prices, stating that insufficient federal oversight to prevent waste and abuse has driven increased spending, Breitbart News reports, which has in turn contributed to inflation across healthcare services, housing, utilities, and groceries.
Staggering Losses to Criminal Schemes
The federal government now spends unprecedented amounts of money, creating countless opportunities for criminal exploitation. According to Government Accountability Office estimates, annual losses to fraud range between 233 billion and 521 billion dollars.
Recent high-profile cases illustrate the scale of the problem. Last week, federal prosecutors indicted 15 individuals in Minnesota for what they characterized as the largest autism fraud scheme ever prosecuted, involving 90 million dollars in stolen Medicaid funds. Another Minnesota case saw the ringleader of the “Feeding Our Future” fraud sentenced to 500 months in prison.
In California, a Medicaid fraud operation dishonestly billed 270 million dollars, with the principal fraudster having pleaded guilty. Nevada authorities recently sentenced a fraudster to 4.5 years for her role in a 100 million dollar tax fraud scheme.
Dissolved Businesses Still Billing Taxpayers
Investigative journalist Walter Curt, founder of The W.C. Dispatch, analyzed the 227-million-row Medicaid spending dataset released by DOGE through the Department of Health and Human Services. His investigation focused on Michigan discovered that 21 of 600 sampled home healthcare businesses were actually dissolved entities that no longer existed as legal businesses, yet they continued billing Medicaid for 118 million dollars. No government official had verified that these businesses were legitimate or actually delivering the services they claimed.
With thousands of government programs potentially vulnerable to similar exploitation, the GAO’s fraud estimates appear increasingly credible. The survey results suggest that voters across the political spectrum recognize the urgency of the problem and support aggressive action to protect taxpayer resources while simultaneously addressing inflation.
