Trump Pushes Global Ceasefire While Israel Maintains Lebanon Position
President Trump called for calm and ceasefire compliance in the Middle East while Israel signals plans to strengthen its military presence in southern Lebanon despite a new U.S.-brokered peace agreement.
Writing on Truth Social Thursday, Trump urged restraint and expressed confidence in the diplomatic process currently underway, according to Breitbart News.
The president declared that the United States remains committed to peace and encouraged all actors in the Middle East to allow negotiations to proceed without disruption. He called for a complete cessation of hostilities across all fronts, specifically naming Lebanon, Hezbollah, and Israel as parties that must observe a ceasefire.
Trump also highlighted positive market signals and falling oil prices as evidence that investors view the diplomatic push favorably. He noted that markets are responding well to developments, with oil prices declining and stock values rising.
The presidential statement followed Wednesday’s announcement of a trilateral agreement between the United States, Israel, and Iran designed to halt fighting and ease regional tensions. The deal includes provisions for ending combat operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and calls for respect of Lebanese territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Yet even as the ink dried on the agreement, Israel made clear it has no intention of retreating from southern Lebanon.
Israel Expands Control Zone
The Israeli Defense Forces released an updated operational map Thursday revealing a significantly enlarged zone of control inside Lebanese territory. The new boundaries place Israeli military units several kilometers deeper into Lebanon than previously acknowledged, including positions near Nabatieh—a known Hezbollah stronghold located north of the Litani River.
Israeli officials confirmed to Reuters that Jerusalem is engaged in discussions with American counterparts regarding the prolonged deployment of Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. One senior official with close ties to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the negotiations as stubborn, suggesting Israel intends to hold firm on its military presence.
Heavy Toll and Continued Fighting
Israel has rebuffed international pressure to withdraw troops following its March incursion, which was launched in response to sustained Hezbollah rocket attacks. The military operation has exacted a severe humanitarian cost: thousands killed, entire villages leveled, and widespread civilian displacement throughout the region.
Combat operations show no signs of abating. Hezbollah forces continued offensive actions this week, deploying explosive drones against Israeli troops operating inside Lebanese territory. The attacks have inflicted additional casualties and cast a shadow over diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire.
The divergence between stated ceasefire commitments and ground realities threatens to complicate the fragile peace process Trump and regional actors are attempting to advance.
