Trump Prepares New Strikes on Iranian Infrastructure Targets
President Trump announced plans for strikes on Iranian power plants and bridges after an Apache helicopter was downed, despite earlier suggesting a negotiated settlement remained possible.
During a phone call with Fox News on Wednesday, Trump stated he is getting close to ordering new strikes against Iranian power plants and bridges, according to New York Post. The president also criticized Iran for what he described as stalling tactics during ongoing peace negotiations.
The escalation comes after an Iranian attack near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday resulted in the loss of an American Apache helicopter. Trump took to Truth Social to issue a stern warning about the consequences of Iran’s delays in reaching a diplomatic settlement.
In a forceful message posted Wednesday morning, the president declared that Iran had squandered its opportunity for a favorable agreement. New York Post reports Trump wrote that the Islamic Republic has “taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price.”
Trump also mocked the current state of Iran’s military capabilities in his social media post, claiming much of the country’s naval and air force capacity has been eliminated. He characterized the Iranian regime as ineffective and declared its status as a regional power effectively finished.
The United States conducted what officials termed “self-defense strikes” against Iranian targets on Tuesday evening in direct response to Monday’s helicopter incident. Iran retaliated Wednesday morning with drone and missile attacks on American military installations in Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait.
The pending strikes represent a sharp shift in tone from the president, who as recently as Wednesday had suggested a negotiated settlement with Tehran remained possible within days.
