Trump Celebrates Lower Car Insurance After Immigration Cuts

President Trump credits his border enforcement policies with reducing car insurance premiums, claiming illegal immigration under Biden caused accidents and theft that increased rates 20 percent.

In a statement posted to Truth Social on Monday, Trump drew a direct connection between border security and automobile insurance rates, according to Breitbart News.

The president highlighted what he described as the catastrophic consequences of the previous administration’s immigration policies, noting that tens of millions of illegal migrants entered the country under former President Joe Biden and former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, including what Trump identified as over 13,000 convicted murderers released from foreign prisons and mental institutions.

Trump argued that these illegal entrants were often untrained drivers who lacked proper licensing and English language skills, forcing law-abiding American citizens to subsidize their presence through skyrocketing insurance premiums. After more than a year of what the president characterized as zero illegal immigration and aggressive reversal of Biden-era border policies, car insurance rates have begun to fall sharply.

The data supports Trump’s claims. Federal statistics show that monthly auto insurance rates increased by approximately 8.3 percent during Trump’s first term, but surged by 20 percent under Biden’s presidency.

That 20 percent increase translated into an effective annual tax of roughly 500 dollars on American households.

A graphic shared by the president illustrated the dramatic shift in insurance cost trends. Rates jumped 20.6 percent in Biden’s third year in office, but by 2025 that figure had collapsed to just 0.5 percent. In 2026, the number turned negative at minus 2.3 percent, indicating actual price decreases.

Academic research appears to validate the administration’s position. A study published in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management found that states issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants and the corresponding rise in uninsured drivers have made American roads measurably more dangerous.

Study author Ruinan Zhao concluded that providing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants increases overall fatal crashes by nearly 5 percent, equivalent to 0.46 additional fatal crashes per county annually. The effect proved stronger in states with larger populations of illegal immigrants, with evidence suggesting that undocumented immigrants may be more likely to engage in risky driving behavior once licensed.

The research lends empirical support to Trump’s argument that reducing illegal border crossings naturally reduces the number of unlicensed and high-risk drivers on American roads, thereby relieving pressure on the automobile insurance industry and ultimately benefiting American consumers through lower premiums.
